Small businesses are boasting around the nation, but Philadelphia is still far behind the big numbers, compared to other metro regions in the East Coast, like New York, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. According to recent data from the U.S. Census by American City Business Journals, between 2010 and 2014, Philadelphia added 412 new small businesses, rising just 0.3 percent. In Washington DC, the growth rate was 4.0 percent, Boston was 2.8 percent and Baltimore's was 1.5 percent.

With a population of less tan 3 million, Uruguay has become an important source of talented entrepeneurs in Silicon Valley.  This is the case of Juan Pablo Olivera, founder of Netlabs, a security software, or Gabriel López, founder of Kezmo, an alternative to Slack. “We always say Uruguay is one of the most stable places in LatAm, with excellent connections, high level of Enlgish and infrastructures”, says Isabella Antonaccio, who helps the Uruguay government to attract American investors to her country.

De todas las cosas interesantes que se sucedieron en el Ayuntamiento de la Ciudad ayer, dos parecen ser las más importantes para la comunidad (la agenda completa puede leerse aquí). Primero, la Concejal María Quiñones-Sánchez presentó una resolución reconociendo y celebrando el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, que va desde el 15 de septiembre hasta el 15 de octubre.

En la edición del 2016 de la Conferencia para Mujeres en Pensilvania, llevado a cabo en el Centro de Convenciones y producido por las estrategias Hill + Knowlton, cerca de nueve mil mujeres (y algunos hombres) de todas las edades y provenientes de todos los escenarios, se juntaron para promover conexiones laborales, alentar el crecimiento personal y aprender de personajes inspiradores de la ciudad, como es el caso de Anita Hill. Asimismo asistieron para reírse a carcajadas de las notas carismáticas de Abby Wambach y Mindy Kaling.

At the 2016 Pennsylvania Conference for Women, hosted at The Pennsylvania Convention Center and produced by Hill + Knowlton strategies, about nine thousand women- and a few men -of all ages and backgrounds came together to foster career connections, personally grow, and learn from inspiring movers and shakers of the city, such as Anita Hill. They also came to laugh (a lot) at the charismatic keynotes from Abby Wambach and Mindy Kaling.

On Friday, September 23, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia held a conference called “Reinventing Our Communities—Transforming Our Economies.” It was the seventh in a series of biannual conferences created to address the problems faced by cities like Philadelphia, Buffalo, St. Louis and Baltimore, which in the 20th century were considered centers of industry but have since experienced demographic shifts and losses of jobs.
